What is Reformer Pilates?
For those that have never done reformer pilates before going to your first class can seem quite intimidating. The first thing people say about the pilates reformer is, “that looks more like a torture device than a piece of fitness equipment”.
“That looks more like a torture device than a piece of fitness equipment”
Don’t worry though Joseph Pilates, who created the pilates reformer, only had your best interests at heart. The Reformer gives users a workout using spring resistance and enables you to work with an increased range of movement that you cant achieve during a mat based class.
What are the benefits?
Like mat based pilates, the reformer helps to strengthen your core, improve your posture and increase your mobility.
Reformer Pilates will complement any fitness regime as we all need a strong core whether you are a high level athlete or simply want to walk the dog, surf or play an amateur rugby match. For many of us we spend most of the day sitting at a desk or looking down at our laptops/phones which often leads to back and neck pain. Reformer Pilates can ease this pain by lengthening and strengthening the bodies muscles resulting in better posture and an increased body awareness.

Reformer Pilates is not just good as a rehab tool it can also help to prevent injuries as well by building a stronger body that can resist the impacts your day to day life can put on you.
Can I do reformer classes without any pilates experience?
YES! Reformer Pilates classes are open to everyone. This type of class is completely new to Cornwall therefore most people who come to a class at Rebel have not done many or any reformer classes before.
However, our style of Dynamic Reformer Pilates requires a base level of fitness to allow you to safely participate in any of the classes.
If you answer no to any of the below please call 07842344099 before booking.
Can you…
- Stand on one leg consecutively for 30 seconds.
- Sit down and stand up from a chair without the use of your hands to assist.
- Fold forwards and touch your lower shin with your hands with straight legs.
- Comfortably put weight on your Hands, Wrists, Elbows and Knees.
- Lay down on the floor and stand up in less than 10 seconds.
- Walk up and down steps unaided by a banister or anything to help with balance.
If you have had or have injuries we recommend starting with a private 1:1 session first to make sure you are able to do group classes. If you find yourself in this situation please call or email Nick to discuss and establish the most suitable path going forward.
How does reformer differ to mat?
Reformer Pilates is based on the regular pilates exercises however on the reformer we can make these easier or more difficult by using the spring resistance. By using the reformer we can tailor the session to your personal needs whilst still being able to attend a group class making it suitable for people of all abilities and experience.
The way we teach at Rebel you will get a more dynamic workout than you may have experienced in mat classes before. We link exercises together to ensure you are moving and working hard throughout the session.
